External Sponsorship

External sponsorship

Sports teams can approach external companies for sponsorship of events, or of the sports team as a whole. This sponsorship can come in the form of funding - or materials/services such as use of a venue, kit or branded t-shirts.

One of the tips to make sure external sponsorship is successful is to make it explicit what the sponsor gets in return. Many companies will seek to advertise to students in exchange for sponsorship. If you need ideas on what you can offer a sponsor, get in touch with the SU. Don’t be vague in your discussion with the potential sponsor as this may lead to assumptions which may be different to what you are expecting. Do not promise anything you aren’t certain you can provide, do not accept a sponsorship amount until approved by the SU.

All sponsorship must be approved by the SU to make sure it is in line with UK charity law. Do not enter into a contract without consulting the SU first! All sponsorship is subject to 20% VAT - make this clear to the company from the outset.

How to accept external sponsors

  • Talk to your potential sponsor, seek advice on your proposal from the SU, but do not sign contracts!

  • Fill in this form

to request external sponsorship, and then email us to let us know you've filled it in

  • If the SU confirm, we will create a contract and invoice the company once they've signed

  • Once they have signed it, they will be obliged to pay, and we can release funds to you

Until we confirm that a contract has been signed, do not consider the sponsorship confirmed.
